Solar carport FAQs
Solar Carport FAQs
Detailed answers to the 30+ questions UK finance directors, sustainability heads, and estate managers most commonly ask before signing off a solar carport project.
How much does a solar car park installation cost in the UK?
UK commercial solar carport costs range from £950 to £1,300 per kWp installed for projects between 100 and 1,000 kWp, before any grant funding. A typical 200-space site (~300 kWp) costs £290,000-£390,000 turnkey and saves around £125,000 per year at current commercial electricity tariffs, giving a 4-6 year simple payback or 3-4 years after AIA full-expensing.
Do you need planning permission for a solar carport?
Yes — commercial solar carports almost always require full planning permission under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. Unlike rooftop PV (which often falls under Permitted Development Rights), a solar carport is a new structure and triggers a planning application. National Planning Policy Framework paragraph 158 explicitly supports renewable energy schemes, so approval rates are strong: our 32 UK projects to date have a 100% planning approval record.
How many parking spaces do I need for a solar carport to make sense?
We typically deliver projects from 50 spaces up to 5,000+ spaces. At 50 spaces (around 75 kWp), the unit economics still work but the fixed planning and design overhead becomes a larger share of total budget. Sites of 150+ spaces (~225 kWp upwards) are usually the sweet spot for commercial business cases.
Can a solar carport be combined with EV charging?
Yes, and roughly 85% of our installations now include EV charging integration. Carports include DC stubs at design stage, allowing 7 kW, 22 kW, or 50 kW chargers to be added at-build or later. The solar feeds the chargers behind-the-meter, dramatically reducing the cost-per-kWh delivered to drivers and qualifying the project for OZEV Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) grants.
What grants are available for solar carports in the UK?
The biggest schemes are: (1) Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) for councils, NHS Trusts, schools and universities — up to 100% capex grant; (2) Salix Recycling Fund — interest-free for public sector; (3) OZEV Workplace Charging Scheme — £350 per EV socket up to 40 sockets; (4) Annual Investment Allowance — 100% first-year tax relief on plant and machinery up to £1m. We help every commercial client identify and apply for the right combination.
How long does a solar carport project take from sign-off to switch-on?
A typical 200-500 space project takes 16-28 weeks end-to-end: 4-6 weeks design and DNO G99 application; 8-12 weeks planning determination; 6-10 weeks build window (foundations, steel frame, panels, cabling, commissioning). Larger sites (1,000+ spaces) typically run 32-44 weeks and are usually phased.
Do solar carports work in cloudy UK weather?
Yes — the UK average of 850-1,100 kWh per kWp per year is more than enough for strong financial returns. Tier-1 monocrystalline PERC panels generate even in diffuse light; on a cloudy day a 400 kWp system still produces 30-50% of peak output. UK solar yield is broadly comparable to northern Germany, which has one of Europe's biggest solar fleets.
Who owns the carport — you, or the site owner?
Both models are available. Most clients buy outright with capital or asset finance, capturing all generation savings and the AIA tax relief themselves. A growing share opt for a PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) — we fund, build and operate the carport, the client pays only for the kWh consumed at a fixed price below grid (typically 25-40% saving) with no capex outlay.
What's the difference between a solar carport and a regular carport?
A regular carport is just a shelter. A solar carport carries an integrated PV array on its roof, structurally engineered to take wind, snow and the panel weight. Solar carports are slightly taller (typically 2.8-3.2m clearance vs 2.5m for basic) and use heavier-gauge steel.
How long does a solar carport last?
25-30 years operational life. Tier-1 panels carry 25-year linear performance warranty (84.8% nameplate at year 25). Carport structure is designed and warranted for 25-year life. Inverters typically 10-year warranty, extendable to 25.
Do you need planning permission for a solar carport?
Yes — commercial solar carports almost always require full planning permission. The National Planning Policy Framework explicitly supports renewable schemes, so approval rates are strong (we have 100% record on 32 UK projects).
Can a solar carport be combined with EV charging?
Yes — and ~85% of our installations now include EV charging. We design DC stubs into every carport so chargers can be added at-build or later.
How tall does a solar carport need to be?
UK commercial solar carports are typically 2.8-3.2m at the lowest point, rising to 3.4-3.8m at the high side.
Can you build a solar carport over an existing car park?
Yes — and that's the majority of our projects. We work over live car parks using temporary fencing and phased construction (1-3 rows offline at a time).
Are solar carports MCS-certified?
Yes. Every system we install is MCS 005 for solar PV (plus MCS 023 for battery where applicable). Carport structure is CE-marked and CDM-compliant.
How much do solar carport panels cost?
Tier-1 bifacial 580W panels cost ~£0.18-£0.22 per watt at trade pricing (~£100-£128 per panel). A 300 kWp carport uses ~518 panels — panel sub-total ~£60,000-£70,000 of the £290k total project cost.
What is the payback for a solar carport?
Simple payback: 4-7 years for commercial solar carports. After-AIA payback: 3-5 years. Public-sector PSDS-funded carports can be near-instant payback (100% capex grant).
Do solar carports work in cloudy UK weather?
Yes — the UK average of 850-1,100 kWh/kWp/year is more than enough for strong returns. Modern N-type panels generate 30-50% peak output even under diffuse winter light.
Can solar carports be financed via PPA?
Yes. 15-25 year PPAs are available at 14-18p/kWh fixed (vs grid 38-52p/kWh). PPA company funds entire capex; you pay only for electricity used.
What about wind loading?
Carports are designed to Eurocode 1 wind load standards (EN 1991-1-4) for the specific UK zone. Coastal locations (zone IV) require heavier-gauge frames.
How are solar carports cleaned?
Annual brush-and-rinse cleaning with deionised water (no detergent). Soiling reduces yield 5-8% in dusty/pollen-heavy environments.
Can a solar carport be expanded later?
Yes. We design every PV carport with spare DC cable runs and pre-sized AC infrastructure to allow a 25-50% expansion later without major rework.
What inverters do you use?
Default: SMA Sunny Tripower for unshaded sites; SolarEdge SE100K with P-Series optimisers for shaded sites; Sungrow SG110CX for cost-sensitive large installs; Huawei SUN2000-100KTL on procurement-approved sites.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. 25-year O&M wrap from £8-£12/kWp/yr. Includes annual cleaning, monitoring portal, fault response, panel and inverter warranty management.
What happens if a panel fails?
Under the 25-year linear warranty, the panel is replaced free of charge (Tier-1 brands ship replacements within 4-12 weeks). The MCS-certified install warranties our workmanship for 2 years; insurance-backed extended workmanship warranty available.
Can a solar carport be insured?
Yes. All-risks insurance for commercial PV (carport included) typically costs 0.1-0.2% of insured value per year. Most clients include the carport under their existing commercial property insurance with a small premium adjustment.
What size battery should I add to a solar carport?
Battery sizing follows your peak demand profile, not solar generation. Rule of thumb: size battery to 1-2 hours of peak site demand. For most commercial sites, that's 100-500 kWh.
Will the carport reduce my Capital Gains Tax?
Not on the carport itself (it's plant and machinery), but improvements to plant qualify for AIA. Speak to your accountant about asset disposal treatment.
Can a solar carport be installed in winter?
Yes. UK winter weather doesn't generally stop solar install — we work through winter (excluding very heavy snow days). Cold weather actually improves panel efficiency.
What if my site has a tight planning timeline?
We can sometimes accelerate by submitting Permitted Development applications (Class A, GPDO 2015 Amendment 2024) for smaller canopies under 30 kWp. Full carports always require full planning permission.
Do I need consent from my landlord?
Yes — solar carport installation is a Schedule II tenant improvement under most commercial leases. We help draft a Carport Wayleave Agreement with the landlord.
