School Car Park Canopies
School car parks we are asked to price typically run from about 30 bays at a primary to 120 or more at a large secondary or sixth-form campus. At around 1.5 kWp per bay that is roughly 45 kWp to 180 kWp, matched to a demand profile concentrated in the school day.

Bands assume £950 to £1,300 per kWp installed, turnkey and MCS-certified. Bifacial modules typically add 5% to 12% over mono-facial by capturing light reflected off the tarmac below.
Model occupancy before yield: the six-week summer break falls across the highest-yielding months, so run self-consumption on a term-time profile rather than an annual average. That assumption moves the payback further than panel choice does.
Safeguarding shapes the programme more than the engineering: a hoarded compound separated from pupil circulation, operatives signed in and escorted, deliveries kept clear of drop-off and pick-up. The canopy structure and foundation detail is hot-dip galvanised S355 steel, CE-marked to EN 1090 and designed to Eurocode wind and snow loading, with EV-ready DC stubs run at build so charge points can be added later without lifting the surface twice.
Solar Canopies for Schools: Funding and Procurement
For maintained schools, academy trusts and colleges the capital rarely comes from one place. The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) has funded up to 100% of capex for eligible GB public-sector estates, with Salix administering delivery; criteria and phase windows change between rounds, so confirm current guidance before a business case depends on it. The OZEV Workplace Charging Scheme sits alongside it and applies to the charge points rather than the canopy, at £350 per socket for up to 40 sockets, a £14,000 maximum. Sequence the grant application ahead of any committed delivery date: the funding calendar is usually the longest pole in the programme.
Tax relief works differently in this sector. Maintained schools and academy trusts are not corporation-tax payers, so the Annual Investment Allowance (100% first-year relief on up to £1m) is generally relevant only to independent schools or to a trust’s taxable trading subsidiary. Treat it as something for your finance director to confirm, not an assumption to bake into the payback.
On procurement, most estates teams either call off a framework the trust already holds access to or run a compliant mini-competition once spend passes threshold. Solar Carports for Universities
University estates change the arithmetic. A single campus car park of 200 bays supports around 300 kWp at roughly £290,000 to £390,000 turnkey. At an indicative 45p to 50p per kWh import rate, the gross annual value of that generation is around £110,000 to £125,000, though simple payback still sits at four to seven years: only units consumed on site displace the full tariff, exported units earn considerably less, and campus load thins outside term. Where the asset sits in a taxable subsidiary able to claim the Annual Investment Allowance, that tightens to three to five years. Re-run both against your own contracted rate.
Two consents run in parallel. Full planning permission is required under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 and is determined by the local council, typically in 8 to 12 weeks, with NPPF paragraph 158 supporting renewable schemes in principle; across 32 UK projects delivered, our planning approval record stands at 100%. Alongside it sits the DNO connection, G99 at commercial scale and G98 only for the smallest arrays.
