How do solar carports work with PSDS for NHS Trusts?
They no longer do. PSDS was administered by Salix Finance for DESNZ, and it closed to new applications when Phase 4, the final phase, ended in November 2024, and no successor scheme has been announced — there is no portal open to apply to. It was also heat-led, so even in an open round solar qualified only alongside a fossil-fuel heating replacement in the same bid. A Trust carport now stands on the energy saving, the export value and the OZEV grant against charging hardware.
Can NHS solar carports include staff EV charging?
Yes — most do. Workplace Charging Scheme (OZEV WCS) grants of £500 per socket, to a 40-socket cap, apply against the charging hardware. NHS Trusts can also charge staff a nominal fee (or offer free use as a workplace benefit) — most trusts now offer free or 5-10p/kWh workplace charging.
What about emergency vehicle access?
Critical — and a major part of healthcare carport design. We work with the trust's estates and facilities lead, plus the local ambulance service, to confirm all blue-light vehicle clearances, fire-tender access, and lockdown procedures are maintained or improved.
How long does an NHS carport take from approval to switch-on?
Plan on 12–18 months from business-case approval to switch-on for a scheme of this size: design and the DNO G99 application, then planning or prior approval, then an 8–14 week build window. PSDS award timescales no longer apply — the scheme closed to new applications when Phase 4, the final phase, ended in November 2024, and no successor scheme has been announced.
